Conditions for transporting leeches

Transportation in water.

To transport leeches to another city by train or road transport with a total duration of no more than 6-8 hours, leeches are packed in plastic containers (1 liter bucket) at the rate of 100 pieces / 0.75 liter of water. This method is convenient because after transportation, the leeches simply need to be transferred to a larger glass container with water, but not less than 3 liters.

Transportation in a peat.

A large number of leeches are packed into the peat for long-term transportation. Leeches are placed in moistened peat and moved into cotton bags, wrapped in newspaper or paper, and then closed in a cardboard box. In peat, leeches can travel for up to 7-10 days. The disadvantage of this packaging is that leeches should be washed from peat upon receipt.

Transportation in cotton wool or foam rubber

A small amount of 20 to 100 leeches is packed in foam rubber and cotton wool, wrapped in newspaper or paper, and then closed in a cardboard box. In cotton wool, leeches can travel for up to 1-3 days. The advantage of this packaging is that when you receive the leeches, you simply take them out of the cotton wool or foam rubber and transfer them to a large container with water. However, when the outside temperatures are critically high or critically low, transportation in foam rubber and cotton wool can lead to partial death of leeches, so transportation in peat remains relevant.

Leech diseases after transportation.

After receiving leeches in the mail, from a train or bus, they must be immediately separated from the peat (if the leech was sent in peat) and placed into the water, if it was transported in water, then placed in settled water, but in a large vessel or pot, separating the dead leeches and those, that move sluggishly from the healthy. All diseases of the leeches are associated with poor care (untimely water change) or poor transportation, which sometimes depends on the weather, because leeches are afraid of high temperatures and can be dried during transportation. The good period for transportation leeches starts from early September to December, as well as from March to June.
